Turns out it was faster to trash the install, install XP from scratch (along with the trouble of loading the SATA drivers via floppy), then the drivers, then the software. When you try to activate with the key it says that this key cannot be used. This trick worked beautiful. I tried everything and everything was à FAIL. About 10-15% of the time the 840 G1s cannot see a bootable image from the HD.

WTF I've just bought a 960Gb SSD for a little under a £100 less. After setting the target drive first and then using the BIOS boot utility to select the USB drive it worked fine. This specific situation with the USB3 drivers only really exists with the Intel 6 series CPUs and associated chipsets AFAIK. Hope this helps some of you.
This 8440p seems like one hell of a little powerhouse when it's configured correctly (this one has the Nvidia Quadro NVS 3100M which is fine by me for video and a Hope this helps someone.
