More background. So the Intel HDMI Audio is Default. The 7.1 glitch is no HDCP hand shake for a Repeater (Stereo receiver in my case). It does not appear to be finding the HDMI audio correctly. If you set sound in Windows to 5.1 you get this problem, although it is intermittent.
