Had to remember to restart WMP (silly me forgot to close it first) and then uncheck and recheck the toolbar option and it appeared. So, sorry, I can't confirm that it works on Windows 8. I also noticed there is an option to remove media player and although I can't say for certain this is what had caused the problem because I'd already fixed mini-mode using How To Pin Windows Media Player To Taskbar It does not automatically start for me so I had to go back and Start it myself.
