Media player classic plays DVDs, WMP9 doesnt! BACKUP...BACKUP...BACKUP Have a Great Day! In either of those programs the videos play the sound only. I use to hate Nero but that is really all you need to play videos.

MS did remove the codecs for video and DVD playback from WMP. That all seemed strange at first but after i read the following article http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/devices/wmconnect/faq.aspx#5_1 which references the file types an extender can support from a windows media center pc I see I mostly use MPC or BSplayer. If they're mpeg-2 could you be using a trial version of some mpeg-2 decoder that just expired? (wild guess) Also sudden stoppage of video playback is often attributed to such things
MPEG-1 files can be played in Windows Media Player with no modifications. WMC is good for local and limited formats; get into remote desktop play and various formats like matroska and flv, and WMC is somewhat less useful than a lump of coal. I have noticed that upon deinstallation of not just the decoder pack but the cineplayer too, that all reverts back to normal and the audio problem is cleared up.
